Luke Themes

The Gospel of Luke is the first volume of a two-part work (the second being Acts) written to a real or supposed person named Theophilus. It has many special features of which the following should be particularly noted: the unique conception, birth and infant narrative of Jesus; the three Canticles; the activity of the Holy Spirit; Mary as mother of Jesus and person of faith; the prominence of angels; concern for the poor, sinners and women (particularly widows); unique stories (Good Samaritan; Prodigal Son; Dives and Lazarus; Emmaus); the unique account of the Ascension; the tendency to use pairs of characters.
