The Infant King

IV - Isaiah xi

A shoot escaped from frost will surely grow
To flower in unimagined shape and hue
Changing the way we measure what we know,
Surpassing in our lives what prophets knew.
Cattle with lions, lambs laid down with wolves,
Leopards with kids and poison asps grown mild
Shall not emerge as our worn world evolves
But burst anew, made trivial by a child
Who by the Spirit and of a maid was born,
Whose comfort past all comfort shall asure,
Whose wisdom past all wisdom shall hold sway:
Then shall all earthly power be put to scorn,
The meek raised high, abundance for the poor,
All things e'er known transformed on that bright day.
