Advent to Candlemas (Vol. 5)

Another Way

No angel can console
Be it so proud and bright
Nor can the star en-lighten
The darkness of this night:
For what was born in wonder
Is dead upon the tree,
The innocence of Ephrath
Engulfed at Calvary.

The candles for the virgin
All splutter in the rain
The laughter of the fishermen
Turns into doubt, then pain:
When back at the beginning,
The message was so clear,
But in the carnage of the Cross
It seems to disappear.

No angel can conceal
Be it so meek and coy
The Risen Christ's return
And our eternal joy:
Yet could there still have been
A way to spare His breath
In Ephrath's dark manger
And His even darker death?
