This is not a completely literal translation of Mohr, much nearer than the usual Freeman Young version of verses 1, 6 and 2 but near impossibly limited by Gruber's melody.
1. Silent night! Holy night!
See their lone vigil bright:
See the holy and intimate pair,
Lovely child with curly hair;
Sleep in heavenly peace!
2. Silent night! Holy night!
Son of God, pure delight:
Love and Laughter illumine his face,
Stunning us with his saving grace
From the hour of his birth.
3. Silent night! Holy Night!
Graces our earthly plight:
From heaven's golden heights his birth
Pours God's mercy on the earth:
God in Jesus seen!
4. Silent night! Holy night!
Father's love, power and might
Given today to the human race
In the arms of a child's embrace:
Jesus for the whole world
5. Silent night! Holy Night!
Ancient plans put things right:
We are freed from the exile of wrong
Foretold throughout the ages long:
Saviour of the whole world.
6. Silent night! Holy night!
Shepherds first saw the light;
Sounding forth both near and far
Heard the angels' alleluia
Our Saviour Jesus is here!
