Advent to Candlemas (Vol. 3)

They Brought Jesus!

They took us from our villages,
Our homes of creeper grass,
And stowed us, worse than animals,
A sick and dying mass;
They drove us into slavery
With the shackle and the lash,
No cruelty too terrible
To get their sugar cash:

But they were a miracle:
With their wickedness and greed
They brought Jesus.

They said that he was one of them
So they were 'specially blessed’
But we knew he was one of us,
Black, harassed and oppressed:
The whites, like Romans, lived in style
His stable was a shack,
He died an innocent, like we died,
But, glory, he came back!

And he is a miracle:
From Calvary and the tomb
Arose Jesus!
