General (Vol. 1)

God in Us

  1. The battle lines of pike and sword once drawn up for the Cross
Are buried now beneath old stones enrobed in brush and moss
But far more powerful than the gun, the Holy Spirit's fire
Strengthens the Church on earth in hope and heavenly desire.

  2. Rather than emnities of old we seek Our Lord in peace
Through war against our inward foe which only death will cease.
And through the ravages of time, the pulse of mind and limb
Are summoned not by battle cries but by the evening hymn.

  3. We seek the Spirit in ourselves and in our neighbour's face,
Quick to forgive - and slow to judge - in comradely embrace.
In art and love, in thought and deed, our ultimate design
Is measured not in what we gain but in what we resign.

  4. Then let us greet the Spirit in ourselves and those we serve,
Blessed with the inner strength of tact and generous reserve,
Pallid reflections of Our Lord in love and selflessness
but, even in our lowly state, reflections nonetheless.
