Peter's Burden

(for Becky Mynett)

A1. In the wind of the Fourth Watch in Galilee
Walks He upon the sea,
Seen as a troubling spirit,
Until He hails:
In the flush of faith's promised glory
Walks Peter on the sea,
Seen as a brave believer
Until he falls.

Fanfare:
Anxious to love and yet afraid:
This is the frailty of the Church You made.

B. Save for Jesus and Mary, none bore
Such human pain and triumph as he
Who dragged his faith to the Italian shore
Where death would rid him of the misery:
But what from Simeon She had heard predicted
He felt he had in some crude way inflicted.

A2. The tear streams streak cheeks still
As if the cock crew,
Seen as his just reminder
Until crucified:
Lost in strange head's hair
They fall with the keys
Seen now to loose
With his feet to the sky.

Fanfare:
Anxious to die but still afraid
This is the triumph of the Church You made.
