General (Vol. 1)

Shepherd

  1. Each mother knows its lambs,
    Each lamb its mother;
    Across the tangled flock
    They hear each other;
    They meet though they start
    From the farthest corners.

  2. The shepherd knows each lamb,
    Its given name;
    Where each has likely strayed,
    Trapped, lost or lame;
    A weakling worth a ram
    He feeds at home.

  3. Our shepherd loves all lambs
    Who as the Son
    More human pain than us
    Has undergone;
    Shepherd and Lamb for us
    Uniquely one.
