General (Vol. 1)

Responsibility

  1. I am the gun and the shock and the dust
With my bit part in murdering, torture and greed
By standing aside when a protest might count
And, for safety, retaining just more than I need.

  2. I am the word of hysteria and hate,
For the alien, exile, displaced, refugee
Who, forsaking the language of neighbour and host,
Condemns or stays silent in controversy.

  3. I am the niggard of copper and tins
Whose giving a little excises all shame,
Who might even give less for the sake of the poor
If it did not add worth to the good of my name.

  4. I am the image of God in this place,
The mouth for His teaching, the soul for His grace
Who, thou warped and distorted, defiled and obscured,
Is the earthly reflection of my Saviour's face.
