Eucharistic Meditations

Thirty Nine

  1. The light that shines from deepest dark,
The light that fills the hemisphere,
Is nothing set beside the light
Which fills our souls when You are near:
That inward light which shines to greet
    Your Body's triumph in defeat.
  2. The bread which makes our bodies thrive,
The bread of home, of club and street,
    Is nothing to the Eucharist
Which makes our inner lives complete:
    That spiritual presence which inspires
    The deepest Heavenly desires.
  3. The wine which cheers and calms our stress,
The wine which binds our social ties,
Is nothing to the wine outpoured
    In witness of Your enterprise:
And the pure fruits of sacrifice
Are sheltered in this calm device.
