Ash Wednesday to Pentecost

  1. Brother of Gethsemane
    Whose suffering was for carelessness,
    Humility for boastfulness,
    Betrayal for our fickleness.
  2. Jesus crowned in cruel jest,
    A twisted thorn for cruelty,
A Jewel of blood for poverty,
    A purple robe for vanity.
  3. King of meekness lashed in scorn,
A wound for each triumphant cry,
A reed for what I would deny,
A taunt for quickly passing by.
  4. Emperor crucified for me,
A nail struck true for crookedness,
A cup of gall for bitterness,
A cry for failure to confess.
