Ash Wednesday to Pentecost

Shall I Be Thomas

  1. Shall I be Thomas then, stand and deny
    That He has risen in body from the dead,
    Dismiss the witness of the ones He loved
    And make do with a metaphor instead?
    What resurrection springs from my poor heart
    Without His Resurrection must be slight;
    Who is this Jesus with the Prophet's art
    Who died forever on Good Friday night?
  2. Before the latest research we retreat
    As if new facts could modify belief,
    Or scholarship design Satan's defeat,
    Or a new theory buy the soul's relief?
    Our only hope is faith as they had faith
    Who saw their Risen Lord whom they thought lost;
    Our only faith the love without a self
    In which we live The Spirit's Pentecost.
