Ash Wednesday to Pentecost

Every Day

  1. Take every day of forty days
    And every night of penitence
As a small token of my love
    Too often lacking reverence:
It is as if we were apart
Which makes me want You ever near,
Counting the days until the day
When You will rise and re-appear.
  2. I know how You will take my hand,
I crave the blessing of Your kiss
But pay the price of broken love
By counting days before such bliss:
I know that You are really near,
That Lent is a benign device
To lead me to Your perfect love
    Attained by way of sacrifice.
  3. And, because love is infinite,
I will seek out the hearts that break
And love them all, for they are You,
Both for themselves and for Your sake:
So will I keep the quiet hour
And read the letters of Your Word,
And write to You in humble prayer,
Knowing that I am loved and heard.
